Chapter 8

“—is supposed to pass down the ship to the next Protector of the Lagoon.”

I knew Thomas had a ship, but I thought it was his ship, not ours, that he sailed around. Apparently, we’ve possessed this ship for many generations of mates and Mothers. Now that Thomas has not returned with it, we’ll need a new one. And we’ll need a new Protector of the Lagoon. But how will I acquire a ship? My daughters and I could lure the sailors off of one, but I know nothing about sailing one. And if I find a protector first, how will I get him to a ship we do not yet possess?

Sitting on the largest boulder of the lagoon, Sybal and I watch my sisters as they play. The moonlight spills down, lighting the clear water and giving it a magical twinkle. The air has grown cooler, most of the humidity gone. Crickets and frogs are part of nature’s chorus around us. Monkeys hoot a goodnight to one another as they prepare to sleep. Starr snaps at one of her sisters, fighting over a small crab one of them found. I smile, pleased my daughter is feeling better.

I glance over at Sybal.

None of her wounds are life-threatening. I have patched her up with seaweed and clay. With how quickly we heal, she will be as good as new in a day or two. Searching her face, I look for signs that she’s in pain, but her expression is only thoughtful as she stares at her sisters below.

“Why hasn’t Thomas returned?” I ask her.

“He is coming. I can feel him, but something delays him.” Her hand lands over her heart. “He has failed me… He failed us.” Her gaze flickers in my direction, her mouth frowning heavily. “I am sorry.”

I shake my head. There’s no need to apologize now that I am in charge. I will make things right, starting with keeping my daughters in line and in sight. Sybal got complacent, but it’s time to put things back in place. Tonight, I’ve ordered my sisters to stay in. They feasted well enough last night to be held over until tomorrow evening. My daughters may have argued, bemoaned, or voiced grievances when I was their equal, but they accepted my decision without any trouble now that I’m their leader.

“Did you bite Thomas?” I ask.

Sybal shakes her head slowly. “I trusted him.”

I didn’t know about a Mother’s Bite until a few hours ago while tending to Sybal’s wounds. It was part of the information coming to me in waves. The power I’ve absorbed holds so much information that my head feels like it’s splitting in half, and it doesn’t show signs of slowing down any time soon. I don’t hate it. In fact, I find everything that I’m learning fascinating.

Like the sparkling trinkets piled high around the cave walls that we sirens collect is called treasure. There are some round and flattened pieces called coins or sometimes doubloons. The colorful rocks are gemstones, and the string of pearls is what humans call jewelry.
